Toby Leaman, bass playing extraordinaire and co-singer from Dr. Dog has dropped an October gem!

Military Applications is a six track EP, released under the name dd Toby Leaman. Dr. Dog fans will delight because it has serious Dr. Dog vibes throughout: with fun buzzy synths, full harmonies, and classic Toby bass lines and melodies. Many, if not all of these tracks, could easily live on a Dr. Dog record. Plus, Eric Slick drums on the whole thing. I also got distinctly Of Montreal vibes from the track Rider. The bandcamp description says Toby is chugging away on a full-length album as well.

Scott McMicken, who plays rhythm guitar and sings in Dr. Dog, is also working on his debut solo album. That will be released from Scott’s new band, The Ever-Expanding. Tessa and I really wanted to catch their upcoming debut show in New York, but couldn’t swing it. Based on a recent Instagram post, Michael Nau is playing bass in that band (or at least in the upcoming show). Check out https://pressonrecords.com/ for more details!

Scott and Toby met in Middle School and have been writing music together ever since. Dr. Dog is without a doubt my favorite band, I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve seen them live. My uncle got us all into them, and would take us to their Atlanta or Athens shows all throughout high school. My first date with Tessa was at a free Dr. Dog show in the rain in some Atlanta park. I once stood front row at one of their Bonnaroo shows and during Toby’s insane belting of The Beach, gripped hands with him as he sang like a madman. In 2021, they announced that they were embarking on one final tour. We all caught it in Austin, and did indeed cry a bit of bittersweet tears. They’re just so damn good.

Super excited for these dudes to explore solo work and have my fingers crossed for a new Dr. Dog album in 2023. In the meantime, I am looping their live albums released this fall from their 2020 San Francisco shows.

Dr. Dog forever ❤
